What do you think is the best practice to advertise a new forum?

Where would you suggest advertising & what methods work efficiently to gain new members?

I believe building relationships with fellow members on other communities is the best way. The people you're connected with will naturally desire to follow what you're doing. Also, $ contest tend to help Wink

Affiliations and memberships to other bigger sites might help. Making it very appealing to possible new members is also a key to an effective forum promotion.

I find the most effective way of getting 'natural' visitors (as in those visitors that visit your site voluntarily without being encouraged to do by forum currency and such) is to join other forum communities that allow signature advertising and post great quality messages regularly and people tend to become interested in you as a person and they get curious and are open to seeing projects that you are part of.

I would be careful with money contests, those may end up only boosting your activity for a period of time and then it could go back to being like a ghost town.

Honestly, just advertise, make sure you actually have content on your forum already so that when someone comes and registers they will have content to reply to and they won't think the forum is dead. You also don't want to make a new user create all of your discussions, you as an Administrator should be motivated to do this.

This! So many times I've seen people open a new forum and it will be completely empty. You need to build some on the new forum just before you start advertising. It makes the forum look more welcoming when there are posts on there already.
